From the sublime (Wednesday's post) to the ridiculous (today's). Three hundred pages to go. I don't know. Just...glargh.

Good Luck with your copyedits Zoe. Hope you got your coffee in the end. Sadly I'm doing nothing but coursework tonight.

I am drinking it now! Ah, life-giving caffeine... I hope your coursework goes well!

Aww, I'm sorry, Zoe. What a pain in the neck copyedits must be. I feel cruel saying that I had a wonderful Friday and have like virtually NO HOMEWORK to do this weekend. Ah, well. I hope you finish up soon. You looked pretty miserable in that vlog.

No, no, I'm glad to hear that you're going to have a nice weekend. I'm not miserable so much as stressed out; I desperately want to get these done this weekend. My editor would be telling me to chill out because I don't actually need to get these back to them 'til the end of the month, but since I'm self employed I need to set my own deadlines, and I really want to start work on FF on Monday.

Hey Zoe!
So, yesterday I started reading TWILIGHT. And, I must confess, it is even worse than I anticipated. Do you remember you did a post a loong while back called "Some Thoughts on Twilight"? And you talked about the very particular scene where Bella is about to be run over by a van, and then Edward appears out of nowhere and then pushes her out of the way, and then the van turns and comes for her *again*, (Completely by accident, too.) and then Edward is flinging her around and stopping the van with his vampire superpowers, and then Bella gets put on a stretcher, and for some reason Edward starts laughing his head off, and then Bella gets really super mad at him for saving her life, and then.... look, I didn't even understand that whole thing. Edward has some SERIOUS multi-personality disorder that makes me sometimes get worried over the poor guy's mental health. I really don't see what Bella sees in him. I mean, am I the only person here that gets that somebody who's eye color can change from "charcoal black" to gold over the course of a biology class may NOT be someone that you should be hanging out with?
Bella is always complaining about how she is stuck in Forks, when it was she who decided to move there, for a reason we still don't know after over 140 pages into the story. Couldn't Stephanie Meyer have at least made a likable main character, if this character is going to be going out with a complete nutcase? If she wasn't so obnoxious to begin with, I might have forgiven her and blamed the fact that she has completely lost her mind on the fact that she nearly cracked her skull open that time when Tyler's van was about to run her over, and people's brains can be effected by that stuff, you know?
She's always complaining about her clumsiness and awkwardness, and how she doesn't find herself too pretty, but then she starts to get really annoyed when poor Mike and Tyler and Eric start getting interested. Of course, she doesn't want to get involved with the normal human beings. She prefers the sort who turn into wolves at night or suck blood. Well, who can blame her? Everyone feels that way, right?
I must admit that I'm on team Jacob, as much as I think he and Edward the most annoying little.... well, you know what I mean. Couldn't Smeyer have at least made him Bella's age, instead of fifteen?

This story could even have turned into a relatively good book, if not for the atrocious writing. Meyer has a terrible sense of grammar, and her writing voice is horrible. One of the most annoying parts is that she tries to act more sophisticated by throwing in random words from the thesaurus that she probably won't know the meaning of anymore by tomorrow.

Why'd she have to give away the ending in the preface? Does she expect us to forget about it by the time the story comes to a close and still be filled with shock by the ending?
Reading this book is so frustrating. I wish THE EMERALD FLAME would arrive already and save me from this demon-cursed novel. No, I'm not exaggerating.
Oh well, homework. It's better than having to put up with these maddening characters a moment longer.....

I am doing a copy-editing correspondence course right now. Even the nit-picking itself makes your brain melt.

Isabel: Well, I did WARN you. You've really got no one to blame for the suffering you're going through but yourself (says the girl who read all four books despite every friend she had telling her not to).

Alex: You'll become immune soon enough. You'll be cackling over the melted brains of your victims instead.

I'm not reading it because I thought I'd like it; I'm reading it because I think that it is good to be aware of exactly what the series half of this country is absolutely obsessed with is all about. You know what they say: read widely in all genres, not just your favorites. So I'm still slowly plowing through this book, despite how horrible it is. But I'm not really intending to read any further books in this series. I don't think I'm physically capable of doing that.
What made YOU read the TWILIGHT books, despite what all your friends were saying about how bad it was?

Zoë Marriott said...

Honestly? The fact that everyone was telling me NOT to read the books made me determined to do it. I'm contrary like that. Plus, I have a writing group who were all saying 'What is this Twilight thing about?' because none of them were willing to read it, and plowing through the books mysself enabled me to tell them all about them so that we could all laugh and mock etc. and read the Cleolinda recaps.

Aw thank you, I can't believe you remembered lol I'm still waitin to hear from my tutor but at least it's all finished for now.

Zoë Marriott said...

I am crossing my fingers for you, Nattasha, but I'm sure you don't need it. I used to get really stressed out about waiting for feedback on coursework but it always turned out all right in the end.

Nattasha said...

Yea that's a relief to know i'm not the only one that gets wound up waiting for feedback.

Zoë Marriott said...

Gawd, I STILL get like it, waiting for feedback from editors. I usually bite off all my nails and eat my way through the entire biscuit cupboard (yes, I have a biscuit cupboard, but it's only a small one).

Nattasha said...

lol I'm the same although I have a tendancy to yap at people until I get something back.
