THE SHADOWS ON THE MOON COVER!!

Sorry for the double exclamation points there - I got carried away with excitement. As anyone would, I think, if they had been presented with the cover I have been presented with! (I managed to restrain myself to one exclamation point there, though - do I get a gold star?)

So, without anymore ado, let me present you with...the Shadows on the Moon cover.

You see that beautiful, enigmatic, dark-eyed, maybe-smiling-maybe-sad girl on the cover? I'm so proud of her I could burst. Not only is she the spitting image of my heroine, but she also kicks that whole RaceFail argument into the gutter. Well done, Walker Books! My heroine lives in a faerytale version of Japan and so the cover shows an Asian girl. None of that default-Caucasian-girl, have the face half in shade so you can pretend you're not whitewashing nonsense. Hurrah!

What's more, the sakura (Japanese cherryblossom) and the pink and blue are all thematically significant. Also, check out the size of my name - that's bigger than Cassandra Clare's name on her Mortal Instruments books. Yes, yes, she IS an NYT Bestseller, but my name is *definitely* bigger.

All in all, I'm not sure I could be much happier. What do you all think?

OHMYGOD
I hope it doesn't freak you out how quickly I reply to your posts. I'm a student, I have a lot of free time.

That cover is amaaaazing. Lucky.

Why should it freak me out? I stalk Maggie Stiefvater's blog like a hawk stalks a rabbit, believe me!

I'm very glad you like the cover - I'm hoping the vivid, pale colours will stand out among all those black/white/red covers that are filling the shelves atm.

Ahhhhhhhhhh I am so happy I could burst. Asian pride!!!! NoRaceFail!!!! Life is good. I can't wait to get a copy of this book, feature the cover, gush about it, otherwise fangirl.... yay for you, Zoe!

Zoë Marriott said...

Thanks. Originally it was about five exclamation marks - I deleted three but I couldn't bring myself to pare it down to a mere, pathetic one.

10, loong, months to go...

Ha ha, Steph Su - I knew I could count on you. It's not going to be out in the US until Spring 2012 (and I don't know what cover Candlewick might use) but I'll try to get hold of a spare copy and send it to you when it comes out here in July.

Hi Zoe!!!
That's a BEAUTIFUL cover!!!
I can't wait for Shadow on the Moon to come out.
I like it even more than the new Swan Kingdom cover :)

I'm glad you like it - I must admit that the beautiful white cherry blossoms (which will be shiny on the finished version) just edge it ahead in the cover stakes for me. I can't wait to see it on the shelves!

Hey Zoe,
Oh, sorry that I keep spelling Shadows on the Moon wrong. I so agree with you about how races are often switched on covers to make them sell better. I own the American version of The Swan Kingdom, and I love it, it's so pretty, but I got rather annoyed that the girl on the cover didn't have red hair when I read that she did. What do people have against red hair?
Oh well, you still have amazing luck with covers. I am now thoroughly convinced Walker Books is the best publishing company EVAH!!!!
Hee hee, I don't even try to hold back the exclamation points (!!!)

Beautiful cover! I am so glad you are pleased with it and I can't wait to read the book. I hope the US cover will be as beautiful. If not, I will have to order the book from Book Depository. :)

I'm crossing my fingers on that front too! I shan't find out anything until next year, but I'll share as soon as I do!

(And yes, the exclamation points were intentional)

It's amazing how tempting that exclamation point button is. I'm glad everyone likes it as much as I do. I think Sophie, the cover designer, would be really pleased.

Aww I found out about this so late. :( The cover is beautiful and I'm so glad that the cover features a race-appropriate face. She's pretty, and the background-Sakura are a nice touch.

I'm glad you like it, Cass. And, just so you know, this will not be the last book I write with a Japanese heroine. I'm working on a synopsis for book #6 now...
