DASTARDLY TROPES & WHAT TO DO WITH THEM

An excellent rant!

I've been deliberately trying to avoid some of those genuinely bad tropes with FP and its sequel - the setting is a country where skin tones range from pale in the north to dark in the south, and since both books are at least partly set in a southern city, a lot of the characters have brown or black skin (including the hero). Two of the heroine's sidekicks are a lesbian couple, and their relationship is in no way an Issue. And of course, there are plenty of strong women...

Thanks, Phoenix. But my main point was really that we shouldn't worry about tropes so much, and I'm sure any that are at work in your book are the good kind :)

Yes, I know - it was a very good point! Tropes seem to have become one of those things that are labeled as Bad by people who don't really understand the term, like passive voice.
